WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITING AND RECORDING MOMENTS? I was emotional and excited to fly to Seattle and record the orchestration. David Campbell played strings on all our albums. It goes beyond strings. . . It was so beautiful that I’ve always wanted it to happen. I wanted this band’s vision to be like a film score from the start. I think you need real to do that right. I did not like keyboards and was very passionate about it. I said, ” Real strings only. Let us play real strings—we’re worth it. We’ll repay you somehow! Ah, god. Avoiding trouble is my goal. Much was fought for. It was our biggest fight to audition and hire a full-time rap-rocker to rap on eight of the album’s 11 songs. I just said, ” No way. Going home. Cancel the deal. Not doing that. That’s not our band. ” We went home for three weeks. I rejoined my parents. It humbled me. The compromise was a guest vocal on ” Bring Me to Life. ” How could I complain now? It worked out great. This makes me happy. On the 20th anniversary edition of Fallen, you get the demo of ” Bring me to life,” which is different from the final. DO YOU PREFER THE DEMO? No, no! That was before strings. I laughed when someone said, ” It’s very interesting to hear because it’s very electronic. ” I said, ” That’s all our demos. ” The band has changed a lot, but my process is similar. Working with sounds, drum loops, and machines at the keyboards to generate a song idea is my preferred method. Electronics are part of it, but the band always comes first. Just how we demo. A cool vibe and cool synths and sounds are essential to loving it as is. So you go down fun, weird electronic paths that half the time don’t lead to the end product. DEMO GUITAR LEADS DID NOT MAKE THE FINAL. We didn’t have that bridge. I think a guitar solo is your standby without a bridge. So I think it improved a lot. Which song is your favorite on the album? ” Going Under. ” For the first single, I wanted ” Bring Me to Life. ” The label wanted it too. We had that opportunity with the Daredevil soundtrack, and we said, ” This is what’s happening. ” We decided, ” No fight. Please make ‘Going Under’ the second single—we need something to grab people. ” We wrote ” Going Under” after ” Bring Me to Life. ” Often when writing an album, you try to top your last, and I felt like, ” OK, we did it. ” The last one. Half the time, your last song is your first single because you reached that point. I liked ” Going Under” and ” Bring Me to Life. ” The expression ” Going Under” is great. My goal was ” I’ve had enough and I’m standing up for myself. ” Instead of ” Bring Me to Life,” a plea for help. PEOPLE SAY FALLEN IS THE BEST EVANESCENCE ALBUM. RATING YOUR DISCOGRAPHY? It’s hard to order them because they’re all different. I don’t think Fallen is our best. It’s our youngest work. I was still learning songwriting. I love that some were written when we were young, which is amazing and beautiful. But you mature and gain experience. Simply because I was younger and hadn’t been through as much, I feel like I have more to say now. But also through live performance, writing with many people, and having all this time. I always write for myself. Writing for us. If I love it, others will too. Never think, ” Oh, how can I please the fans? ” I love Evanescence’s 2021 album The Bitter Truth more than any other. I hope I only feel that way until we write our next album. DO YOU HAVE A TIMELINE FOR THE NEXT ALBUM? I try not to set a timeline and let it happen. But we’re there. We’ve finished our tour. We’ve toured steadily for two years. We had our last South American show two weeks ago and it was great. We’ve all been eager to start. These thoughts fill your phone notes. Item pieces. The start.
