The Irish also signed two outstanding wide receivers (Beaux Collins, Kris Mitchell), a top edge player (R. J. Oben), a frighteningly accurate kicker (Mitch Jeter), and an experienced nickel player. Notre Dame has traditionally focused on graduate transfers, but Leonard and Collins are undergraduates. The school and football program must work together to compete in the modern day. Notre Dame also signed a strong 2024 recruiting class without late drama, which is rare in NCAA football. Freeman also hired Loren Landow as his strength and conditioning director. I didn’t know much about Landow when he was hired, but the more I learned about him, the more I realized he’s the strength coach Freeman wanted and highly respected in the field. The task wasn’t cheap, and Landow didn’t accept the status quo in staffing and amenities. After former offensive coordinator Gerad Parker left to coach Troy, Freeman entered a period that would determine if he could take Notre Dame to the next level and whether the University would back him.
