On December 2, 1983, MTV premiered Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video, which changed the music video industry. Jackson defied the three-minute rule with a five-minute-and-57-second version of “Thriller” on his 1983 album of the same name, just like Queen did with “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 1975. For the music video, John Landis directed a nearly 14-minute mini-movie that became the first music video registered in the National Film Registry in 2009. The 13: 42 YouTube video, which has a plot and ending credits, has been called one of the greatest music videos ever. The Making Michael Jackson’s Thriller behind-the-scenes documentary won the 1984 Grammy for Best Video Album. Ironically, the video lost the 1984 MTV Video Music Award Video of the Year to the Cars’ “You Might Think,” but it won Best Overall Performance, Best Choreography, and Viewer’s Choice. The video has become synonymous with Halloween and Jackson’s legacy, from the Backstreet Boys’ 1997 “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” music video to a viral sensation of 1,500 Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) inmates doing the iconic choreography in their orange uniforms. But that level of influence required careful planning and creativity. Explore the video’s production and secrets here. Jackson told Landis he “wanted to be turned into a monster, just for fun,” which inspired the music video, Landis told Vanity Fair. This was Jackson’s third music video and seventh single from the 1982 Thriller album (which had been on the charts for a year) after “Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” so commercial success and acceptance weren’t a priority. Instead, he experimented. “Jackson was the ideal video star,” said Vanity Fair. Not only did he radiate epicene glamour that was innocent and intensely erotic, but he was conceptually inventive, a great dancer, and a sartorial trendsetter. It was ironic that the monster look was “fun”. According to J. Randy Taraborrelli’s biography, Jackson’s father, Joseph Jackson, once climbed through his son’s window wearing a mask to scare him. Father tried to remind child to close window, but it backfired. The incident caused years of nightmares for young Jackson. He was often frightened by his father. I wasn’t a horror fan because I was scared, he said. Jackson intended “Thriller” to be more campy and comical than scary. So he called Landis, who directed An American Werewolf in London in 1981. Landis suggested filming it as a full-blown narrative on 35-millimeter film with Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker, who had done the Werewolf film. At the time, film directors were not allowed to “stoop” to the level of a music video. Jackson seized the chance. Money was the issue. A half-million dollar budget was unprecedented. CBS Records refused to pay for another video from this album since there were already two. Jackson and Landis were creative and perhaps cocky about the video’s success. They planned a 45-minute behind-the-scenes documentary called Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller before the video was made. But it worked. Showtime and MTV each paid $250,000. After the 1983 hit Flashdance, Jennifer Beals was the top choice to co-star with Jackson. Her versatility as a 1950s and 1980s love interest satisfied Landis’ needs. She declined the offer. “I auditioned a lot of girls and this girl Ola Ray [stood out],” Landis told Vanity Fair. She was crazy for Michael. She smiled beautifully. I had no idea she was a Playmate. ”
She showed her affection for Michael. On the 1983 set, she said, “Michael is very special, not like any other guy I’ve met. Since working together, we’ve grown closer. He’s come out of his shyness. I think he was sheltered. He knows many entertainers, but he needs friends to relax with instead of talking to his mannequins in his room. Jackson was a 25-year-old, 5-foot, 7-inch, 100-pound superstar who was equally dedicated to his career and Jehovah’s Witness beliefs when “Thriller” was filmed. He avoided swearing and pre-marital sex according to his beliefs. He was so dedicated that he told Landis he closed his eyes during London’s An American Werewolf sex scenes. Landis wanted a sexy video, but Jackson’s shyness made setwork difficult. His book Monsters in the Movies states, “In adolescence, youngsters begin to grow hair in unexpected places and parts of their anatomy swell and grow. ” Everyone has these physical changes and new, unfamiliar sexual thoughts. No wonder we accept literal metamorphosis. ”
Even instructing Jackson to ” Make it sexy this time” is documented. Like you want to f**k her. ”
Jackson succeeded and possibly experimented with Ray, who said she had “intimate moments” with him in his trailer at a “kindergarten level”: “I haven’t seen him in his birthday suit, but close enough. ” Michael Jackson Notebook Planner
