Sweden is host Go Gold At Hockey’s 2024 World Juniors. After 2020, hockey’s World Junior Championship returned to Europe. From Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, Gothenburg, Sweden hosts the 2024 tournament. At the end of the hosting experience, the host country wants its first gold medal since 2012. However, the US, Canada, and Czechia may object. Sweden, a perennial hockey powerhouse that has supplied more than 10% of the NHL’s talent this season and trails only Canada (41. 8%) and the United States (28. 6%), has struggled to win the International Ice Hockey Federation’s annual U-20 World Championship. As a coming-out party for future NHL stars, World Juniors has become a Canadian holiday tradition and has grown in popularity abroad. Canada leads the tournament with 20 goals in 47 years, including at the 2022 and 2023 events on their home soil. Russia, including the USSR and CIS, ranks second with 13 golds but will not compete in 2024 for the third time. Due to the Ukraine war, it and Belarus are banned from IIHF competition. The US and Finland share third with five golds. MVP Trevor Zegras led Team USA to its last fan-free bubble win in Edmonton in 2021. Finland won its last gold in Vancouver in 2019, with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen named top goaltender. Only twice in tournament history have the Swedes won gold: in 1981 and in Calgary in 2012, when Mika Zibanejad broke a scoreless tie against Russia in overtime. This year’s tournament format is the same as a decade ago. Ten teams will play two round-robin groups until New Year’s Eve. Top four teams from each group advance to the Jan. 2 one-game crossover knockout round. The semifinals and medal games are on Jan. 4 and 5, respectively. Sweden is six hours ahead of North America’s Eastern Time Zone, so games will air during the day. NHL Network airs all games in the U. S. , while TSN covers in Canada. Start times are staggered to avoid overlap. Czechia plays Slovakia at 6 a. m. ET on Tuesday, December 26, followed by three other games. Check out the two round-robin groups. Group A’s round-robin games will be at Gothenburg’s 12,000-seat Scandinavium. Canada, the two-time defending champion, is the top seed but has a young roster. Though age-eligible, 2023 MVP Connor Bedard, gold medalists Kevin Korchinski, Adam Fantilli, and Shane Wright are skipping the tournament to play for their pro teams. Bedard, Korchinski, and Fantilli play in the NHL; Wright plays in the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Zach Benson, 18, drafted 13th overall by the Buffalo Sabres last June, has also stayed with the team. Tristan Luneau of the Anaheim Ducks and Tanner Molendyk of the Nashville Predators were sidelined by illness and injury, respectively. Ty Nelson and Jorian Donovan replaced them. Canada’s only 2023 returnee is 19-year-old Montreal Canadiens prospect Owen Beck. Macklin Celebrini, a talented forward and possible first-overall pick next June, will be watched closely. Canada has three NHL players this season: captain Fraser Minten of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matthew Poitras of the Boston Bruins, and Matthew Savoie of the Sabres. Canadian goaltending is uncertain heading into the tournament. The fourth-seeded Swedes are in Group A. The team has considerable international experience, including a gold medal at the 2022 World U-18 Championship. Captain Liam Ohgren, Noah Ostlund, and Jonathan Lekkerimaki will lead the forwards. All seven of Sweden’s defensemen have been drafted by NHL teams, including Detroit Red Wings first-rounder Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Winnipeg Jets Elias Salomonsson. Undrafted 5’10” netminder Hugo Havelid excelled at U-18 level. He has a chance to shine in front of a devoted audience. The other Group A teams are Finland (5th), Germany (8th), and Latvia (9th). The Finnish roster is thin and missing 2022 first-rounder Joakim Kemell, who is with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. Konsta Helenius and Emil Hemming, both 17, are intriguing draft-eligible forwards for Finland. Both were named ‘A’ players to watch by NHL Central Scouting in October for the 2024 draft. Group B’s round-robin games will be at 6,000-seat Frolundaborg. Seeded No. 2, the Czechs took Canada to overtime in the gold-medal game in Halifax last year. All-star 2023 player Jiri Kulich will captain Czechia. And while all-star defenseman David Jiricek has aged out, his draft-eligible younger brother Adam will play on the Czech blue line. Czechoslovakia has one of the best starting goalkeepers. Michael Hrabel, 18, is 6’6″ and 209 pounds. He is having a strong NCAA freshman season with UMass Amherst after being drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the second round last spring. The Americans won bronze in 2023 after missing out in 2022. Though seeded third, they have a strong top-to-bottom roster. The U. S. National Team Development Program produced captain Rutger McGroarty, Philadelphia Flyers first-rounder Cutter Gauthier, and dynamic defenseman Lane Hutson. Forwards Ryan Leonard, Oliver Moore, and Gabe Perrault were 2023 first-round picks. The Americans will miss Logan Cooley, now a Coyotes regular. Along with McGroarty, Gauthier, and Hutson, Jimmy Snuggerud, Gavin Brindley, and Trey Augustine—part of the tournament’s deepest netminding troika with Jacob Fowler and draft-eligible Sam Hillebrandt—are returning from 2023. Zeev Buium, the only undrafted player on the U. S. blue line, has garnered attention for his strong freshman play at the University of Denver. NHL Central Scouting rates him another A-draft prospect. Sixth-seeded Slovakia could be Group B dark horses. The quarterfinal against Canada last year went to overtime before Bedard scored the game-winning goal after 57 shots. Adam Gajan, a 19-year-old goalie selected in the second round by Bedard’s Chicago Blackhawks last June, was a standout. Nine Slovakian forwards have been drafted, including captain Adam Sykora and CHL players Dalibor Dvorsky and Samuel Honzek. Maxim Strbak, a 2023 Buffalo second-round pick and Michigan State freshman, is the star on the blue line. No. 7 Switzerland and No. 11 Norway, promoted from Div. 1A in 2023, complete Group B.
